Background Information

Hello. I'm Michael Moen, inventor of the Cord Stick® Multiple Draw System. I'm also an obstetrician. This saga began in 1995 when, as a member of my hospital's Infection, Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, I was asked to investigate a rash of needle stick injuries in labor and delivery. I discovered that some of the injuries occurred while obtaining routine umbilical cord blood samples after delivery. I began to wonder how one could collect a two specimen sample in one operation. Some weeks later while buying needed supplies at the marine store, I noticed a double barreled syringe containing epoxy glue. The idea struck!

I sketched out the basic design for the multiple draw system and then contacted my lifelong friend and patent attorney, Gene Woodle. We wrote a patent application which was ultimately granted. Over the next few years, with the aid of the designers and machinists at RBK Tool and Die, my friend and graphic artist, Floyd Johnson, other doctors, nurses, midwives, and consultants, the details of product development were ironed out.
